For more than a decade, The Duke’s Infant & Child Foundation (TDICF) has been committed to delivering exactly that assurance to children living in orphanages and care homes across Nigeria.

Over the years, our engagement with orphanages has never been limited to delivering supplies and leaving.

We have consistently chosen relationship over routine charity.

Many organizations visit care homes during festive seasons. They distribute gifts, take photographs, and move on. While those efforts are valuable, we recognized early that children need more than occasional visitors.

They need consistency.

They need familiarity.

One of the most cherished traditions within TDICF has been the decision to turn personal celebrations into opportunities for inclusion.

Many birthdays come and go with family gatherings, cakes, decorations, gifts, and photographs. Yet for children living in orphanages, such celebrations are often experienced from a distance.

We believed there was a better way.

Rather than celebrating our own children in isolation, many members of the TDICF family began taking birthday celebrations into orphanage homes.

Parents brought their children.

Friends joined.

Volunteers participated.

Families shared meals.

Games were played.

Laughter filled the atmosphere.

Birthday cakes were cut.

Songs were sung.

Memories were created.

But beneath the excitement was something much deeper.

Those moments communicated a powerful message to every child present:

You are worthy of celebration too.

For a few hours, the boundaries that often separate institutionalized children from society disappeared.

Children laughed together.

Played together.

Shared stories together.

Celebrated together and in those moments, many experienced something that every child deserves, the joy of belonging.

These were never simply birthday parties.

They were declarations of inclusion.

They were expressions of love.

They were investments in emotional wellbeing.

They were opportunities to plant smiles that would remain long after the decorations were taken down.

Investing in Education Because Potential Should Never Be Interrupted

At TDICF, we believe one of the greatest injustices a child can experience is having their potential limited by circumstances beyond their control.

Every day across communities, children board school buses filled with excitement, friendship, anticipation, and a sense of normalcy.

For many children growing up in institutional care, however, ordinary childhood experiences can often feel extraordinary.

The school bus changed that.
